Furie


The last ocean-going steam tug in the Netherlands is ss "Furie", now owned by the "Stichting Hollands Glorie" at Maassluis. The ship was built in 1916 by Shipyard G. & H. Bodewes at Martenshoek. She was then named "Bodewes 6". In 1919 the owners decided to sell her to Holmen Bruks & Fabriks AB at Norrkoping, Sweden, who renamed the vessel "Holmen 3". After a long service record, she was again sold in 1969 to A.Akerlund in Stockholm, who renamed her "Holmvik" and employed the vessel till 1976 for the towage of timber. Then in 1976 AVRO Television bought the tug and the vessel featured in the TV serial "Hollands Glorie" by the famous author Jan de Hartog first as the "Jan van Gent" and later as "Furie". On completion of the serial she was again sold in 1977 to Handels Mij. Heise at Zaandam, who resold her to a specially established foundation "Stichting Hollands Glorie" at Maassluis.

The propulsion is done by a triple expansion steam engine of 450 ihp built by Engineering Works Fulton at Martenshoek.
