Kontio / Otso

With the icebreakers OTSO and KONTIO two of the most modern and interesting ships of the Finnish fleet were built in 1986/1987 at the dockyard of Wärsilä (Finland). Both ice- breakers were equal, except for some details as the funnel and radar. The two propellers are driven by four electric motors, energized by a combination of 4 Dieselengines (each 5460 kW) and 4 Generators (each 7540 kVA). This technique makes it possible to deliver an equable power and the engines can be controlled faster. The ships are equiped with a new developed Air Bubbling System. This system consists of tubes, installed on both sides on the lower parts of the hull. Pressurized air comes out the tubes and reduces the friction between the hull of the ship and the ice.
