SCALE
MODEL OF A HIGH-SPEED TORPEDO BOAT TO 1:40 SCALE
FITTINGS SET AND POWER SET INCLUDED IN THE KIT
One
of the most interesting naval developments of the Second World War, both
in visual and technical terms, was the S-boat class, of which the S 130
was a member. The main operational area of these 35 m long high-speed vessels
was the English Channel and the North Sea, although they were also taken
as far as the Mediterranean and the Black Sea by the overland route. The
armament of the S 130 consisted of two 53.3 cm torpedo tubes, one 3.7 cm
AA gun and three 2 cm AA guns in the form of a twin turret and a single
mount in what was known as the ˛well˛ in the watertight forecastle, which
also housed the two torpedo tubes. The boat was propelled by three 20-cylinder
diesel engines each rated at up to 2000 BHP. With these engines the boats
were capable of a top speed of 39 kn at a displacement of 110 t (full load).
The boat on which our model was based was built in the Schlichting yard
at Travemuende and was launched on 21st October 1943. It was initially
assigned to the 9th S-boat flotilla. S 130 was assigned to the British
in 1945 as prize of war and was operated by the Royal Navy under the designation
FPB 5130. Twelve years later, on 7.3.1957, the R.N. transferred the boat
back to the German Federal Navy where it was employed at the submarine
weapons school as training boat UW 10 until being decommissioned in 1963.
Just like the full-size vessel our model of the S 130 offers high running
speeds and good manoeuvrability. There is plenty of space in the vacuum-moulded
hull for the three 400-size electric motors, a 7-cell rapid-charge battery
and all the components of the radio control system. The kit includes a
complete fittings set, all the power system components, the electric motors
and a boatstand.
