On
17th December 1938 a German U-boat was completed at the Germania dockyard
in Kiel. The vessel was U 47, serial number 583, and it was destined to
become probably the most famous German submarine ever commissioned. Under
the captaincy of Lieutenant Günther Prien, U 47 was to become the
most feared Grey Wolf operating in the Atlantic for a period of two and
a half years, sinking a total gross tonnage of over 200,000 BRT. These
figures made U 47 one of the most successful German U-boats of the 2nd
World War. Even today the subıs former enemies acknowledge Prienıs outstanding
achievement when, on 13th October 1939, he penetrated the powerful defences
of the main anchorage of the British Home Fleet at Scapa Flow in the Orkney
Islands. There the U-boat sank the battleship Royal Oak and seriously damaged
a second ship, the Pegasus, before making her way home undamaged.
Kit contents:
On 7th March 1941 U 47 was sunk by the British destroyer Wolverine during an attack on a convoy to the south of Ireland; there were no survivors. During the development phase of our model of the U 47 we set great store on absolute scale fidelity and accurate reproduction of the details of this boat. In spite of its substantial length of 1.67 m this dynamically diving boat is very manoeuvrable and can submerge very quickly. The net result is a realistic model with an equally convincing performance in the water. This is an imposing model, but construction time is significantly reduced by the factory-made flooding slots, so the modeller is relieved of the time-consuming task of drilling and trimming these parts.
